Areas of Practice

With over 120 years of combined experience, our attorneys handle all aspects of personal injury law, wrongful death, medical malpractice, premises liability, family law, criminal defense, workers’ compensation, residential and commercial real estate, business law, probate and estate planning, appellate matters, and other areas of practice.

Personal Injury, Automobile & Trucking Accidents

Personal injury law is a legal practice area that deals with cases where an individual has been harmed due to someone else's negligence or intentional actions. It covers a wide range of accidents, including car accidents, slip and fall incidents, medical malpractice, and defective products. We work to help our clients obtain compensation for their injuries, such as medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. We may also negotiate with insurance companies, file lawsuits, and represent our clients in court to ensure our clients receive the best possible outcome.

Criminal Defense

Defending our clients in criminal defense matters takes a special commitment to defending your rights even in the most difficult circumstances and in the highest courts. Our criminal defense attorneys have experience with both. At Smith, Hannan, Parker & Bowden, P.C., we work to protect the rights of our clients, build a strong defense, negotiate plea bargains, and represent them in court. The goal is to ensure that the client receives a fair trial and the best possible outcome, which may include reduced charges, dismissal of charges, or acquittal.

Family Law

Our family law practice deals with issues related to family relationships and domestic matters. Some of the key areas of family law include divorce, child custody and visitation, child support, adoption, paternity, alimony or spousal support, and domestic violence. Our attorneys help clients navigate these legal issues, providing legal advice and representation in court proceedings. Whether we are negotiating settlements or drafting legal documents, we protect you and your interests.

Real Estate

Real estate law encompasses legal issues related to the purchase, sale, and use of property. It covers a range of topics, including property ownership, landlord-tenant relationships, real estate contracts, zoning and land use regulations, and property disputes. Our attorneys advise clients on legal matters related to their real estate transactions and represent them in negotiations and disputes. They may also draft and review real estate contracts and other legal documents, conduct property inspections, and ensure that all legal requirements are met during a real estate transaction.

Probate & Estates

Probate and estate law are areas of law that deal with the management and distribution of a person’s assets and property.  Probate is the legal process that takes place after death, which involves validating the deceased’s will, identifying their property and debts, paying any outstanding debts and taxes, and distributing their assets to their heirs or beneficiaries.  Probate also often refers to the general administration of a person’s estate after death, even without a will.  Estate law concerns a person’s physical and personal property and involves planning for a person’s finances and property both during their lifetime and after.  Estate law encompasses those who can plan for themselves and those who are not able to do so, whether by reason of illness or disability.

Appellate

In appellate law, we represent clients with appeals of trial court decisions. In an appeal, a higher court reviews the decision of a lower court to determine if it was legally correct. Our attorneys handle cases that involve challenging or defending the decisions made by trial courts. From researching and preparing legal briefs to arguing before appellate courts, we work to convince the court to overturn or modify a lower court's decision. Our goal is to ensure that legal errors are corrected and justice is served.

Business Law

Our business law practice assists clients in the creation, operation, and management of businesses. It includes a variety of legal issues such as contract law, employment law, intellectual property law, and commercial law. From business formation to mergers and acquisitions, contracts, taxes, and regulatory compliance, we advise clients on matters related to trademarks, patents, copyrights, and trade secrets, and represent them in court or in arbitration proceedings if disputes arise.

Arbitration & Mediation

Mediation is a non-binding process in which a neutral third party helps two or more parties negotiate a resolution to their dispute. Arbitration, on the other hand, is a binding process in which a neutral third party hears arguments from both sides and makes a decision that is legally binding. At Smith, Hannan, Parker & Bowden, P.C., we believe in providing the most experienced guidance we can to help clients in their important legal matters.
